Alexandra Mena, mezzo-soprano, was born in San José, California to Argentine-Italian parents. She made her Davies Symphony Hall debut as Elizabeth Bennet in excerpts of Kirke Mechem’s new opera Pride & Prejudice, a world premiere she performed with the San Francisco Choral Society. Alexandra has also appeared as Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi with Bel Cantanti Opera; Iarba in Cavalli’s La Didone with the San José State University Opera Theatre; the Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors with the United Methodist Church of Los Gatos; Curra in La forza del destino, Second Witch in Dido and Aeneas and Carmela in La vida breve with West Bay Opera; and the Third Spirit in The Magic Flute with Mission City Opera.
Crossing over to musical theatre, Alexandra debuted the roles of Glinda the Good Witch in the Wizard of Oz and The Wardrobe in The Beauty and the Beast, both with the Addison-Penzak JCC, at the Heritage Theater.
In concert, her solo work includes Haydn’s The Creation with the Santa Cruz Symphony; Pergolesi’s Magnificat, Bach’s Magnificat & Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 with the San José State University Concert Choir, Collegium Musicum and Symphony Orchestras; Haydn’s Harmoniemesse and Mozart’s Solennes de Confessore with the West Valley College Concert Choirs; and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with the Fortnightly Music Club. She has been a featured soloist with Mission City Opera, the NATS Recital Series, the Silicon Valley Charity Ball, the Arts Museums of Los Gatos, the Cattle Baron’s Ball, and St. Joseph’s Cathedral Basilica, as a guest cantor.
Alexandra is the recipient of the Charlene Archibeque Choral Endowment Scholarship Award at San José State University, where she is completing a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. She currently studies with mezzo-soprano Layna Chianakas.
