Songs of Love & Hope

Junior Recital

Habe Dank.  The only two words swirling in my mind today, the day after my solo recital.  People come into our lives, leave their indelible mark, and then go on their way.  In the wake of my mother’s passing on February 11th, I find myself recognizing the things she left me with.  Her fiery spirit, her “can do” attitude, and her tenacity.  And while she will always be the reigning diva in our household, she was also a woman of quiet introspection.  She not only gave me my fighting spirit, she also gave me my voice.  Blessed with a beautiful instrument that she hardly trained, she sang in small shows and most notably in church, where all would come to hear her.

The only time she saw me perform was in the summer of 1997, when I had my first experience on the operatic stage as a chorus member in Oakland Lyric Opera’s Cavalleria rusticana.  Ironic, since this opera holds a very dear place in our family history and it’s the first opera I heard as a child.  But I have no doubt that she was with me last night, as I performed my solo recital at San José State.  Strauss’ “Zueignung” and, in particular, Kirke Mechem’s “Let it be Forgotten”, took on a whole new meaning for me after her death.  I was so blessed and so privileged to have had Kirke Mechem and his wife in the audience, which made it all even more moving for me.  Thank you both so very much!  I think my mom would have been proud.

I couldn’t have done this recital without the support of my family, friends and colleagues at SJSU, who were there for me during a very tough time and whose flowers filled my house afterwards, some of which were placed by my mother’s pictures.   I will never forget your generosity.......

Finally, I say thank you to the woman who made me who I am today.  Mother-daughter relationships are not easy and ours was no exception.  But underneath it all there was nothing but love.  I pray that her spirit is in peace, that she knows she’s missed and loved by those she left behind, and that every one of my performances is a tribute to her.  I love you mom......
